A journal of my trip to Malta, Montana to attend the Dinosaur Exploration program with the Judith River Dinosaur Institute.
Here are a few examples of what I found:
It started raining very hard about 2:00 and there was no sign of it letting up, so I decided to quit early instead of staying to the 4:00 quiting time. I was concerned about my ability to get back out to the highway if the roads got too muddy. It was a challenge to navigate the muddy roads because the mud is sticky and coats your tires. I had to stop and get out to scrape mud from the tires and tire wells so that I could continue. The weather cleared soon after I left the quary, but I was satisfied with all of my finds, and I wanted time to drive out to the Fossil Butte National Monument, about 10 miles west of Kemmerer.
There are at least three sets of footprints here. Two of them are large plant eaters and one of them is from a smaller meat eater. I made casts of both types. First I covered the footprints with cellophane so that my clay wouldn't damage them. Then I pressed clay into footprints and pulled the casts out, covered them entirely with cellophane to prevent drying and put them in boxes.
After that I drove all day to reach Kemmerer, Wyoming. I hit some of the heaviest rains that I have ever seen between Salt Lake City and Evanston, Wyoming, where I turned north to Kemmerer, where the rain ended.
Kemmerer is a neat little town where the J.C. Penney store was started. They also have a funny sence of hummor. There are signs on the traffic signals telling you to press the button to cross the street, but there are no buttons ... only the signs.
